Course Aims
The course is intended to provide the delegate with the knowledge and skills required to be competent to carry out the duties of a Rail Grinding Operative, excluding switches and crossings.

At the end of this course the delegates will: -
- Be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the duties of a Grinding Operative.
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of Abrasive Wheels for each Grinding Machine
- Be able to identify the effects of Rolling Contact Fatigue in Plain Line only
- Be able to demonstrate competency in the safety aspects and use of the Head Grinder (MV3) and Rail Deburers (MC3) focusing on the Plain Line element, including Hand Held Angle Grinders
- Be able to use relevant track gauges
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Magnetic Particle Testing
Pre Requisite Requirements
The following pre-requisites are required:
• Neway highly recommends that you have 6 months of experience in a Permanent way environment
• A basic knowledge of the track and its components
• Hold a valid certificate in the safe use of Abrasive Wheels in accordance with the PUWER Regulations (1998)
• Manual Handling
PPE Requirements
This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line and therefore, they MUST be in possession of:-
• Valid P.T.S. Card
• High Visibility Flame Retardant Coverall to EN531, EN470 and GO/RT3279
• Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 15090 H13 C1 AN-F2A-PPE 3aCAT
• Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397
• Anti-Vibration Gloves
• Safety Glasses BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance B
• Dust Mask BS EN149 or M3 Air- fed Respirator Safety Mask
The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.
Certification
A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to the delegate upon successful completion of the course. Certification is valid for 3 years subject to required mentorship.
