Grinding Operative Plain Line and S&C (TR80) - Refresher

Course Aims

This refresher is intended to re-affirm the Grinding Operatives competence relevant to duties of a grinding operative.

This course is designed for the following: delegates who have missed their 8 week grace period but up to 6 months after their expiry date; delegates who have missed their mentoring and/or assessment; delegates who have failed the recert/assessment

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course the delegates will: -
• Be aware of all amendments and alterations to Network Rail Standards:
• NR/L2/TRK/001
• NR/L2/TRK/053
• NR/SP/TRK/0056
• Re-affirm the competence to undertake the duties of a Grinding Operative

Pre Requisite Requirements

  • This course is designed for the following: delegates who have missed their 8 week grace period but up to 6 months after their expiry date; delegates who have missed their mentoring and/or assessment; delegates who have failed the recert/assessment
  • Have recent rail grinding experience of a minimum of 6 months, which must include a minimum of 4 (four) grinding repairs, of which 2 (two) must be on switches – this must be evidenced in their manager’s letter of recommendation
  • Have awareness of current PUWER regulations in respect of abrasive wheels
  • Hold NDT (LPT/MPT)
  • Hold MC3 competency / Robel 13.61  
  • Hold MV3 Competency
  • Hold Hand Held Angle Grinder Competency
  • Hold 110V Generator Competency

PPE Requirements

This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line and therefore, they MUST be in possession of:-

  • Valid P. T. S. Card
  • High Visibility Flame Retardant Coverall to EN531, EN470 and GO/RT3279
  • Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 15090 H13 C1 AN-F2A-PPE 3aCAT
  • Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397
  • Anti-Vibration Gloves
  • Noise – Ear protection to EN352
  • Safety Glasses BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance B
  • Abrasive wheels in accordance with PUWER Regulations (1998)
  • Manual Handling
  • Dust Mask BS EN149 or M3 Air- fed Respirator Safety Mask

Certification

A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to the delegate upon successful completion of the course. Certification is valid for 3 years.
