Grinding Operative S&C - Initial

Course Aims

The course is intended to provide the delegate with the knowledge and skills required to be competent to carry out the duties of a Rail Grinding Operative for switches and crossings, excluding plain line.

Learning Objectives

Be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the duties of a Grinding Operative.

Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of Abrasive Wheels for Rail Deburers (MC3).

Be able to identify the effects of Rolling Contact Fatigue in S&C only.

Be able to demonstrate competency in the safety aspects and use of the MC3 and Head Grinder (MV3) focusing on the S&C element, including Hand Held Angle Grinders.

Be able to use relevant track gauges

Be able to demonstrate an understanding of Liquid Penetrant Testing.

Pre Requisite Requirements

The following pre-requisites are required:
• Neway highly recommends that you have 6 months of experience in a Permanent way environment
• A basic knowledge of the track and its components
• Hold a valid certificate in the safe use of Abrasive Wheels in accordance with the PUWER Regulations (1998)
• Manual Handling

PPE Requirements

This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line and therefore, they MUST be in possession of:-

  • Valid P. T. S. Card
  • High Visibility Flame Retardant Coverall to EN531, EN470 and GO/RT3279
  • Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 15090 H13 C1 AN-F2A-PPE 3aCAT
  • Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397
  • Anti-Vibration Gloves
  • Ear protection to EN352
  • Safety Glasses BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance B

Respiratory Personal Equipment (RPE) Requirements

  • A half or full-face respirator with gas/vapour filters, rated at FFP3 shall be worn by all delegates
  • Disposable paper masks are permitted, provided that they comply with EN14387 and hold the FFP3 rating
  • Half-face respirators with attachable gas/vapour filters are also permitted, but they must comply with EN14387 and hold the FFP3 rating

A powered air-fed mask is the preferred option for RPE, as it provides the greatest protection and comfort. Delegates must ensure that the filters are the correct type.

NOTE: Where facial hair (including stubble) obstructs any part of the mask's seal, delegates shall either remove the facial hair or alternatively, wear a full-face air-fed mask.

Delegates who present to the training event without sufficient PPE/RPE will be turned away.

This is in line with recent guidance from Network Rail regarding the correct types of RPE to be worn by individuals sporting facial hair

The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.

Certification

A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to the delegate upon successful completion of the course. Certification is valid for 3 years subject to required mentorship.
