EXTENSIVE RANGE OF COURSES COVERING

TRACK MAINTENANCE AND RENEWALS

Track Design - Plain Line

Course Aims

To provide Engineering, Technical and Project staff with a good understanding of track design so that they can use the knowledge learned during the plain line part of the track asset life cycle (e.g. renewal, maintenance, refurbishment and enhancement).

Duration

5 days

Learning Objectives

  • What is track and how it performs under traffic
  • What do we mean by design and why does design matter during the asset life of track
  • The linkage between design, track quality and vehicle dynamics
  • An overview of the Principle Standards covering track design
  • Understanding and calculating Plain Line Track Design requirements– Horizontal, vertical alignment and cant -maths understanding and candidate exercises
  • Practical session – Simple alignment survey and development of a horizontal design
  • Clearance considerations when designing plain line track
  • Design Interdependencies and Design Management
  • An overview of the trackbed and its role in achieving a resilient design
  • Software used to achieve alignment designs
  • Route Evaluation of design requirements for higher speeds or greater axle weights
  • The importance of maintaining design through the asset life
  • The importance of achieving required design during track construction works
  • Candidate study exercises
  • Knowledge Assessment for Plain Line Design

Pre Requisite Requirements

The following pre-requisites are required:
• Prior technical experience in working in the Permanent Way environment.
• A basic understanding of Track Re-alignment by the “Hallade” Method.
