Laser Control of Renewals Work
Course Aims
The course is intended to provide the delegate with a clear understanding of how Beacon Lasers are used to monitor and control machinery used in Track Renewals. The course is suitable for Technical staff involved in Renewals and/or setting out for tamping and Network Rail Site Supervisors; Managers.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course the delegates will be:
- Able to set up and balance beacon lasers taking into account site topography and what activities are to be monitored/controlled
- Aware of the importance of controlling depths of excavation, crossfall and track levels
- Be able to use “Level eye” to measure levels, depths and to form Test & Inspection Plans
- Aware of how to set up a laser controlled dozer
- Aware of how a ballast cleaner cutting depth and crossfall can be controlled
- Able to use lasers to set out for tamping
- Aware of how to set out vertical curves and straight gradients
- Aware of the pitfalls in using multipoint lasers
Course Duration
2 days. An additional day can be arranged for practical site work with a dozer as required (client to supply suitable site with machine)
Pre-requisites
There are no particular educational or competence pre-requisites for the course. However, the following factors will benefit the delegate:
- Prior experience of site work
- Good numeracy and mental arithmetic skills
- A clear understanding of plain line and S&C vertical designs
Personal Protective Equipment
This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line, therefore, he/she MUST be in possession of: –
- Valid P.T.S Card
- Protective “all orange” High Visibility clothing to BS EN 471:2003
- Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 20345:2004
- Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397:1995
- Ear Protection
- Safety Glasses to BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance F
- Gloves
The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.
Certification
A Certificate of Training will be awarded to the delegate upon completion of the course.
