Inspection and Maintenance of Switch and Crossings
Course Aims
This course is intended to provide a delegate with a comprehensive understanding required for the Inspection and Maintenance of Switch and Crossings.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course the delegates will: –
- Have a clear understanding of S&C components
- Be aware of the design consideration for S&C
- Have an understanding of the track standards as applied to S&C
- Be aware of the contract requirements for the maintenance of S&C
- Be able to carry out an inspection of S&C
- Have a clear understanding of maintenance and repair procedures
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of setting out S&C for lifting
- Be able to measure components requiring replacement
- Be able to carry out a site survey and prepare a work plan
- Have an understanding of derailment risk in S&C
- Have an understanding of S&C renewal proposals
- Be aware of the interface between S&C and track signalling
Course Duration
Three days
Pre-requisites
There are no particular educational or competence pre-requisites for the course. However, the following factors will be of significant benefit to the delegate: –
- Prior experience of working within the Permanent Way environment
- Have a basic understanding of the track and its components
Personal Protective Equipment
This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line, therefore, he/she MUST be in possession of: –
- Valid P. T. S. Card
- Protective “all orange” High Visibility Clothing to BS EN 471:2003
- Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 20345:2004
- Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397:1995
- General Purpose Gloves to BS EN388:2121
- Safety Glasses to BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance F
Certification
A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to the delegate on successful completion of the course.
